Color Match Key in Foundation Favorites

Foundation Favorites

Getting a good color match with your foundation can be a challenge. Many brands are limited in the number of shades they offer and sometimes, price can be a barrier. Here are some of my favorite foundations. Three are prestige or high-end brands and two you can pick up at your local drug store.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup $40  img_3075-ub-naked

This one is my absolute favorite. When I’m wearing it you can barely tell I have anything on. It looks like me only better. It’s sheer. Weightless. Long-wearing. You can build the coverage if you need to and it doesn’t look dry or cakey. The best part about this prestige brand is that it has 24 shades. If you want a sheer foundation, a great color match, and a flawless finish this might be the product you’ve been looking for.

Benefits for the woman north of 40

Naked Skin Liquid Makeup reduces the appearance of fine lines. Imperfections almost disappear.  Skin appears more radiant and youthful.  It’s got good stuff in it – anti-wrinkle peptides, brightening agents, antioxidants, and sodium hyaluronate – stuff to help keep your skin looking and feeling great.

Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation $40  img_3051ud-all-nighter

The All Nighter Liquid Foundation is in the Urban Decay family but a different product line.  This full coverage foundation is three times more pigmented than the Naked Skin.  Because it’s so pigmented, it is not buildable.  One pump – smoothed on and blended out with a brush should leave you with a flawless matte finish.  Another nice thing about the All Nighter Liquid Foundation is its mattifying effect.  It absorbs oil and reduces shine.  It’s also long lasting and wells wear.

If I’m having problems with blemishes or have trouble spots to hide, I wear the All Nighter Liquid Foundation.  When my skin is clear and sheer coverage is what I desire, I go with the Naked Skin.  Since each of these Urban Decay products has 24 shades, color matching should not be difficult.  Neither of these products contain SPF (sun protection factor) so make sure you apply sun protectant as part of your daily routine.

MAC Mineralize Moisture SPF 15 Foundation $38

img_3055-macMAC Mineralize Moisture SPF Foundation is another good choice. It comes in 22 different shades and the satin finish gives a “lit from within” glow. It provides the perfect canvas for blush, bronzer, or whatever product you choose to apply. I use this prestige brand in NC 40. It doesn’t dry my skin and I don’t look like a grease ball at the end of the day.

Budget Conscious?

If you’re budget conscious, these last two products might work for you.

Covergirl Queen Collection All Day Flawless 3-in-1 Foundation $12.00  img_3061-queen

The 3-in-one formula “fuses powder, concealer, and foundation” to provide a cost-effective, long-lasting product. It wears well and looks natural. I did a comparison by making up my face with MAC NC 40 on one side and the Covergirl Queen 3-in-1 Foundation in Sand on the other. The difference was imperceptible. This product is specially formulated for dark skin and has 14 shades. The only problem is that you can’t find it in every drug store.

img_3063-loreal-visiliftL’Oreal Paris Visible Lift Blur Foundation $13.00

Now this one is interesting.  I wanted to try another drug store brand and I came across this one.  I took a look at the reviews before I tried it and overall, the reviews were good.  Most thought the product did exactly what it said it would do – minimize fine lines, reduce pore size, even out skin tones, and provide anti-aging benefits.  Most of the ladies believed their skin looked better than ever.  However, there were a few reviews that said the product didn’t last very long, transferred onto clothing, and color matching was a problem. Undeterred, I decided to give it a try.  Here’s what I found:

The color match was wonderful.  At first, I thought it was a tad bit warm but no, it was perfect.  My face looked smooth, poreless, and radiant.  It was so natural looking. The tint was just different enough that I could tell a difference from my usual foundation but no one else could.  I turned my face from side to side and thought this one could be my new best friend.  It covered every bit as well as my high end brands and was a third of the cost.  Another plus?  It has an SPF of 18.  I was in love.  I can’t call it a favorite since I haven’t had it for very long but it’s new and I’m loving it. The drawback?  It only comes in 12 shades and my shade, Honey Beige No. 211, is one of the darker shades.

August Finds and Favorites — Loving the Sun Dipped Glow Kit

August Finds and Favorites

Anastasia Sun Dipped Glow Kit

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites Sun Dipped Glow KitMy newest find and current favorite is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in Sun Dipped.  It is absolutely amazing.  I saw it at Ulta Beauty — didn’t buy it.  Checked it out on line.  Didn’t buy it.  Went back to Ulta to play with the tester.  Still didn’t buy it.  I held out as long as I could.  I was on a no-spend makeup budget and trying to stick to it.  The next day, when my husband was gone fishing, I made a trip back to Ulta and picked that baby up.  I couldn’t hold out any longer. I went solo so my sister and granddaughter couldn’t be accused of contributing to my madness.  Wouldn’t you know it — he called when I was on my way home!

“You aren’t out shopping are you?” he asked.

“Well, honey, to be honest, I am.”

“I knew it.”  He chuckled.  “Just watch the budget!” I was watching it all right and watching my platinum points build up at Ulta.

The Anastasia Glow Kit in Sun Dipped has four metallic powder highlighters to give your skin a luminous glow.  Bronzed is an amber penny metal finish. Tourmaline is a warm taupe with a rose gold finish.  Summer is a luminous sand color with a white gold finish and Moonstone is a radiant quartz with a pearl finish.  Sun dipped works well on all skin tones but I’m really loving it on my ebony sisters.  The shades can be layered or worn separately.  Mix it up.   You won’t believe how nice it looks.

Brush Alert

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites #23 Brush, Anastasia Beverly Hills

This is the recommended brush to use with this set — #23 by Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Be careful what brush you use when applying the product.  Bronzing and multi-tasking brushes pick up and transfer too much product.  Try a fan or a diffuser brush.  These brushes don’t pick up as much product and give you the control needed to apply just the right amount of highlight.  When I’m really feeling myself, I’ll dust the velvety-powder over my cheekbones and my décolletage.

Which Glow Kit is for you?

Anastasia Beverly Hills has five Glow Kits.  One of them will be just right for you.  Let me know which one you pick up!

A Few Favorites

Clarisonic Facial Cleansing Brushes  Mia 2 $169  Mia Fit $219

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites Mia 2 White KitWhether you’re a makeup wearer or not, clean, healthy skin is a must.  The rotating brushes of Clarisonic’s face cleansing systems gently but effectively clean and exfoliate revealing younger-looking, more radiant skin.  I love my Mia 2.  It’s gentle enough for twice daily use and I don’t have to worry about damaging my skin.  I also recommend Mia Fit.  It’s smaller, fits into the palm of your hand, and tucks easily into a bag.  Want softer skin that’s six times cleaner than skin washed with hands alone?  Try a Clarisonic cleansing device.

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites Majorette by BenefitMajorette (Benefit cosmetics) $29 provides a youthful flush and it’s the perfect cheek color to help you transition into fall.  If you’re north of 40 and starting to have problems with fine lines, this cream-to-powder blush doesn’t settle into creases like powder products do.  Is it WOC (women of color) friendly?  It works well for me and my milk-chocolate sisters but it’s not the best option for dark-chocolate beauties.  For them, I recommend After Glow.

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites Iman After GlowAfter Glow (Iman Cosmetics) ($16) works well for all skin tones.  It’s listed as a sheer finish bronzing powder but it works well as a blusher.  This tri-color product is absolutely amazing.  Swirl your brush through all three colors and lightly dust your cheeks for a beautiful blush. For a sun-kissed glow, use more of the golden-shade and a heavier product application.

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites Jungle QueenGet the perfect pout with Jungle Queen by Lipstick Queen ($24).  The papaya-coral color is simply gorgeous and complements all skin tones.  It’s nourishing, hydrating, and totally kissable. (Little transfer of color and not sticky!)  I love wearing it.   If you’ve been sticking with neutrals and are ready to try something just a bit more avant garde – Jungle Queen is the one for you.

What didn’t I like?

Makeup on Aisle 64 August Finds and Favorites Time Balm

Time Balm Face Primer® is my miss this month.  My foundation does not go on smoothly when I use this primer.  I’ve tried it with three different foundations and the results are the same. I feel like I’m tugging at my skin and not getting a good application.  I’ve tried applying the foundation by hand, with a brush, or a combination of both and I just don’t like the results.  I will not be repurchasing Time Balm Face Primer®.

There you have it — my August finds, favorites, and least liked product.

Palette Play – St. Tropez Face Kit

Makeup on Aisle 64 - Iman St. Tropez

Palette Play

 St. Tropez Face Kit

I’m exploring palettes.  I just love it when new ones come out.

“WOC friendly?”

Is this palette WOC (women of color friendly?” is a question I’m often asked. Unfortunately, all too often, the answer is no.  This time, when I got the new palette itch I decided to go with one specifically designed for women of color – Iman’s St. Tropez Face Kit.

I think I found a new love!  This palette is gorgeous and what makes it so great is that it has just about everything you need to create a complete look – eye shadow, blush, bronzer, and lip color. And it all works so well together.  Makeup on Aisle 64 - Iman St. Tropez.

If you’re looking to get a natural or neutral look, this kit’s for you.  The kit offers four eye shadows ranging from a shimmery gold high light to a chocolate brown.  The shadows sweep onto the eyelids beautifully and any combination you choose gets you the perfect natural eye.  With the right technique, a smoky eye is doable but you’d have to work at it.

The blusher was the biggest surprise for me.  It wasn’t the typical rouge.  This tricolored powder blush ranged from a range of rose-tinted browns and golds that perfectly accented my face.  I swirled my Real Techniques blush brush in the colors and then applied it.  I got just a hint of color, a subtle glow on my cheeks but nothing obvious. .

The cream bronzer was intriguing since I’d not tried one before, but it wasn’t a problem.  My Real Techniques bronze brush easily picked up and applied the color.  I had just a bit of a shimmer on my cheeks.  Nothing too deep — just the right amount to accent my face.  I loved it!

The St. Tropez Face Kit also includes four lip colors – two lip sticks and two lip glosses.  They complement each other perfectly.  When I pair Lipstick #1 with Lip gloss #1, I get a nice, creamy color that’s a perfect neutral. There’s just enough pop to get attention.  The shades work perfectly with the rest of the palette.

How do I look?

Iman has taken the work out of finding the right lip color when getting ready for the day.  With the St. Tropez Face Kit I can get a look that takes me from home, to work, and out to dinner.  And the best part?  It’s completely affordable.  You can order it online for $20 at Iman Cosmetics.  .

So that’s it for now from Makeup on Aisle 64.
